TeV String State Excitation via High Energy Cosmic Neutrinos

چکیده
We construct the open-string scattering amplitudes for neutrino-gluon collisions and evaluate the high energy neutrino-nucleon scattering cross section via string state excitations in the TeV string-scale scenario. We find that the neutrino-gluon scattering is the dominant contribution, 5 − 10 times larger than neutrino-quark processes, though black hole production may be larger than the string contribution at higher energies. We illustrate the observability of the string signal at the Auger Observatory and the IceCube neutrino telescope for the string scale MS ≃ 1 TeV. What Can We Learn from Cosmic Rays ?
Ultra high energy cosmic rays (UHECR) pose a problem either for particle physics or for astrophysics (or for both) by the unexpectedly high number of cosmic ray showers observed with energy above ≈ 5 × 10 19 eV , the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin (GZK) cutoff [1]. Our emphasis is on those possible solutions of the puzzle which assume that ultra high energy neutrinos travel cosmic distances. We presen...
متن کاملThe Particle Physics Reach of High - Energy Neutrino Astronomy
We discuss the prospects for high-energy neutrino astronomy to study particle physics in the energy regime comparable to and beyond that obtainable at the current and planned colliders. We describe the various signatures of high-energy cosmic neutrinos expected in both neutrino telescopes and air shower experiments and discuss these measurements within the context of theoretical models with a q...
متن کاملCosmic Rays and New Physics at the TeV: the Neutrino-Nucleon Cross Section
Ultrahigh energy neutrinos can be used to explore the physics at the TeV scale. We study the neutrino-nucleon cross section in models with extra dimensions and the fundamental scale at the TeV. In particular, we discuss the production of string resonances and the gravitational interactions (multigraviton exchange and production of microscopic black holes) in these models. We show that the new T...

متن کاملTeV-PeV Neutrinos from Giant Flares of Magnetars and the Case of SGR 1806-20
We estimate the high energy neutrino flux from the giant flare of SGR 180620 on December 27, 2004, which irradiated Earth with a gamma-ray flux ∼ 10 times larger than the most luminous gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) ever detected. The Antarctic Cherenkov neutrino detector AMANDA was on-line during the flare, and may either have detected high energy neutrinos for the first time from a cosmic point sour...
